I am struggling in finding the perfect name for my food brand. I have a great story and I have come up with many names, but none have really captured the essence of my story as well as sounding great on its own.

Hi Harrison, I am Creative Director and branding and package design specialist.

Naming a product is tough. You want the name to encompass all the product has to offer but be distinctive. The other challenge is to assure the name can be registered legally not with just a state business registration but a federally applied trademark to protect it.

Write everything you have down than play with the words. Run it by other people you may be too close to it, like a mini focus group.

Short names work the best and are more sustainable in the consumers mind.

Sometimes names just have to sound good and the brand is built behind that intention. Nike, Starbucks, etc., didn’t mean anything until the product image/logo took traction along with the great product.

The name also needs good design that is proprietary. It may cost some money but find a good design firm they will help you craft the look for your name that will build life around your product.

Hello, Harrison -

Finding the perfect name for your company can be daunting, but here are some tips from Business Insider: http://www.businessinsider.com/ten-keys-to-a-killer-name-for-your-company-2010-11.

I like tip #10: sample potential customers. Brainstorm some initial ideas and ask others to provide feedback on them. This iterative process may help you decide on your company name.

Best, Lucca
