Hi Alfred. Think about alternatives. You can: go organic or with specialties, offer coupons, improve inventory management and merchandise layout, communicate with customers through social media, offer prepared foods, start home delivery, introduce technology, create a website, sell online, have offers for seniors, make available promotions and discounts, provide freebies, stimulate customers loyalty, have better deals with large quantities, hire very friendly people, expand your product line, apply statistics to evaluate sales/behaviors/ etc, offer inexpensive branded and reusable shopping bags, collect email list from customers, provide free tasting and in-store events, and so on. Have a great success!

The key factors to a grocery store is understanding your market. If your market is of lower or upper class. What the ethnic background of the area you are located is. Insure that you know what your clients want, then move forward with what you want to do to bring that clientele in to your business. As others who have answered you before have said, coupons and discounts always attract those who believe that your store offers great value. Sometimes making the experience at your location unique is a added bonus.
