Joomla is a platform that is free and open source and very customizable. I work with an online community of about 500 people and we have used it with great success for our online congregation. It also allows multiple users to post materials easily. I just worked on a Joomla based site for a govt. affairs firm too - while the focus isnt on community, the content management system and customization it allows for is great. Most hosting companies (like Network Solutions and Bluhost) allow you to install Joomla with a click of a button. Ning also looks interesting though less customizable and I dont have any direct working experience with it.

I've built my community using WordpressMU and Buddypress. There is a lot of opportunity for creativity and customization but it's definitely labor intensive. Upgrades to the platform and the plugins are CONSTANT making it necessary to have help to maintain it.

What kind of community your customers want will determine the kind of online community you decide to build, as stated above. The 1+ billion members of your artisan coffee community don't want to hear about their coffee tasting adventures. They are looking for a small group of knowledgeable coffee enthusiasts with comparable tastes. On the other hand, bloggers who make a profession from sharing their lifestyle are more than willing to work to expand the size of their brand's community inside the enormous Instagram community of more than 1 billion members.
