I am currently in the process of completing a business plan for equity funding, would equity or crowd-sourcing be a better fit to maintain more ownership and say of my startup?

One major question I would ask is: are you seeking only capital or capital AND strategic guidance? If you are only seeking capital, I believe crowd funding is a great way to raise money. You can outline terms that ensure you will maintain over 50% of your business. Nextseed is an example of a crowd funding platform that primarily facilitates debt-like investments (i.e., not giving up any equity). If you are seeking an investor who will assist in the strategic direction of the business, the firm will likely require more equity (as it will require an investment of their time).
