Starting up a Business Franchise

I am looking for advice regarding starting a Business Franchise. I already have the FDD documents and need outside guidance as to whether or not certain Franchises are worth the investment.

The last time I looked at a franchise opportunity I spoke with existing franchise owners and managed to find individuals who had passed on the same franchise opportunity.  After talking with both sides the pros and cons were clear.  This allowed me to avoid what would have been a very costly investment as the parent company is no longer in business.

So I would talk with a an existing owner.  I'm sure the franchise development person you are in contact with has already referred you to some people.  Be sure to attempt contacting a few franchisees who are not on the recommended list.  Beyond this, attempt to contact a recent startup in your industry that chose a different franchise name and/or went independent.  You'll be amazed at how many people are willing to share their experience with you as they have encountered the very same problems and decisions.

Talk with lots of people - don't be afraid of bothering people.  If they are bothered you likely won't hear from them again.  A more formal way to get introduced to these individuals is through your attorney or accountant's network.  Best of luck with it!
