Dear Constance, there are several good online courses and certifications as well as many that are useless.  Depending on you marketing efforts and the need for a proven track record sometimes certifications and memberships can help make up for experience.  Each industry and profession have certain certifications that are well recognized within the idustry and those are the ones to look at first.  I would like to be more help, but not knowing which course suppliers or certifications you are looking at, I can not be more specific.

Dear Constance, I agree with Colin.  There are several great, even essential online courses that lead to certificates that can further a career hand help to improve the marketing of your business.  A couple examples that come to mind are the CFP for a financial planning practice, or the CFA for a financial analyst are both essential certifications that are difficult to achieve by means other than taking an online course.  One last note, if you're wondering if online courses in general are frowned upon, I'd say no, It is always beneficial to increase your education and hang a certificate on the wall.  The main thing to consider may be the cost benefit analysis of taking the time away from your business and spending the money.

Colin and Shomari were pretty thorough on this, but just my two cents: most of the reputable schools - both A and B - have both online courses and classroom courses, for undergrad, grad and certificate programs. It's been my experience to use one of these to get what I needed as they were legit all the way through. Why? Think of it this way: if you were an accredited teacher or proctor, would you want your name linked to JUST an online school or academy?

Hope this helps.

Colin, Shomari, and John your words are very helpful. I'm looking into going to the Wedding Planning Institute for a certification in wedding and event planning. I am still pursuing my degree in Public Relations though. I should have been done years ago, but sometimes, life, resentment and laziness pushed me back.

Anywho, I totally agree with you all. I will continue to do my research and really just pray about where GOD leads me to which course or action to take.

Thanks All!

Constance,

Something else to think about.....what is the reason you want the certification.  Is it for YOU personally to feel good about what you've accomplished, or will it really help to promote your business??  I've earned 3 degrees and several certifications, but I find that real life experience has always been the best teacher.  Since it sounds like you are already trying to make up for a little lost time (I'm a pro at that :)...we should really take a look at what the benefit vs. cost (time and money) will be for gaining certification vs the other options.  LMK how I can help.
