Good knowledge about the sector you want to venture into is very important (experiencial knowledge). Secondly, you have to study the viability and feasibility of the business (business plan). Then proceed to making choice of location and target market (clients/customers). They are the basics!

Mathias hi. Assuming you know very well your industry and profession/trade you have to define your commercial purpose (services, products) and find out (with market research) if the market is ready to receive it. In case the potential demand is attractive, the next step is to develop a business plan, which should contain marketing, finance, personnel, etc. subplans. Enjoy the process.

Before starting a business or an IT company, you need to identify your niche in the market. This will help you to know what type of products and services you can offer. Once you have identified your niche, then start doing some research on that particular niche and check out how people are currently making money from it. If there is no information available about it, create one and put your thoughts down in writing.
Once this is done, try and find ways to promote yourself so that customers will be able to find out about your business. You can use all social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter as well as other sites like Google Maps to generate traffic to your site. Then once they visit the site, tell them about the products or services that you provide which they might be looking for at that time. There should also be some kind of marketing plan because if there isn't one, then how will customers know about me?
Hope this answers your question!
