My professional background

Chuck Tyler is a disabled US Army veteran, who served his country for over a decade. He has been awarded the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the Army Commendation Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster.

He has taken on several leadership roles following his military career including serving as a mentor and coach to others in business and as a consultant to start-ups looking for guidance on how to scale their businesses. Most people believe that a business is like an ecosystem, in which one thing feeds off another and is ultimately dependent on it.

The truth is that it's much more beautiful and complex than that.

A business is different from an ecosystem in that its health is not dependent on the other parts. A business can be as healthy as it wants to be, as long as it maintains a healthy mind.

Here's the key question to ask: "What's killing your business?”

The answer to that question may be different for you than it is for your clients, customers, or employees. It might be the same thing that's killing your business for everyone, or it might be something completely different.

You know the answer already, but it's important to take a step back and think about it. There's a reason we're here.

Founders created their businesses as a way to make money. Everything we do is driven by the profit motive. It's important to understand the reasons why you are doing what you are doing and why other people are doing what they are doing.

If you can't answer those questions, they will continue to haunt you.

My expectations for a successful mentoring relationship

When you are running a business, you have to make a very important decision. It's the most difficult decision you will ever make: Do you want it to be a long-term, sustainable business? Or do you want to try to turn a profit as quickly as possible so that you can get back to your real life?

The first decision is easy. In most cases, you know in your heart which one you want. If you don't know where you want to go with your business, start by asking yourself these three questions:

Why did I start this business?

Where do I want to end up when this is done?

How do I want to get there?

How entrepreneurs can prepare before we start

When approaching a potential mentor, have a game plan for how you are going to get there, have a clear idea of what you want to do and most importantly, make sure you understand the mentorship relationship.

Ask questions, listen and follow their advice. Remember your mentor is only there because they want to help YOU succeed.

A mentor will help you make better and wiser decisions along the way.

Identify and set realistic goals, ask great questions and follow through.

After going over your goals, your mentor will be able to tell you how best to achieve them.

It's important to know what you want and be able to communicate your expectations properly.

You will be more focused, achieve more, and get more out of the experience than if you were to go at it alone.
